Public Domain software is where the author has made the program source code public. Many of these programs have been written by American quasi-governmental bodies that are required to release publically funded work. The original code can often be found for free on the WWW. However, anybody can take this code, make their own changes to it, and then sell it at commercial prices. Therefore this listing contains a mixture of free, or nearly free, programs and commercial versions of these programs. The commercial versions usually have a better user interface and user support, that the original free programs may be lacking.
