Description FEFLOW (Finite Element Subsurface Flow and Transport Simulation System) is a finite element package for simulating 2D and 3D flow, (reactive) contaminant mass and heat transport processes in groundwater and the vadose zone. It is capable of simulating: - groundwater systems with or without phreatic surfaces, - problems in saturated or unsaturated zones, - density-influences systems (both salinity and temperature affected flow), - complex geometric and parametric situations. The package is fully graphics-based and interactive. Pre-, main- and post-processing are integrated. There are data interfaces to GIS and CAD and an open programming interface. 2D plotting of isolines, diagrams etc. 3D visualization techniques for volume and surface displays, rotation, translation, shading, 3D cursor, arbitrary cross-sections, fence displays, isosurfaces, map integration, 3D and 2D pathline computations (by Runge-Kutta or Pollock method), flow vector patterns, isochrones and others. A Galerkin-based finite element method for unstructured meshes is used. For convection-dominant transport problems upwind techniques are available. For 3D hexahedral and pentahedral elements of a trilinear and triparabolic approximation, for 2D quadrilateral and triangular elements of a bilinear and biparabolic accuracy are available. Different time marching schemes can be chosen. Nonlinearities are solved either by the Newton or Picard iteration methods. All parameters are handled on an element level, i.e., they can differ from element to element and it is possible to consider steady-state or transient quantities (e.g., conductivity can be changed with time). Accordingly, parameter heterogeneity, zoning or constantness settings are arbitrarily possible. Anisotropy of the hydraulic conductivity is supported for both 2D and 3D. The solution of sparse equation systems can be solved either by iterative or direct techniques.
