Description GEOTHERM is a 2D finite element program that predicts in situ ground temperature conditions in response to both climatic and human induced activities by modelling transient heat conduction mechanisms in freezing and thawing soil. The program accounts for latent heat of fusion within soil due to phase change of pore water. The program can simulate heat exchange at the ground surface, computing the heat flux from monthly meteorological data such as air temperature, solar radiation, greenhouse factor, wind velocity, snow depth, and evapotranspiration. It is completely general with respect to material properties and boundary conditions. It has been used to assess construction and operation of many facilities in areas affected by permafrost conditions, to analyze thermal response of ground around various pipeline configurations, and to model thermal implications of offshore production structures on permafrost foundations. The program is capable of simulating the meteorological factors that affect heat transfer at ground/air interfaces.
