Description | PQuake provides a field data capture system for post-earthquake technical reconnaisance. It includes a digital camera, a handheld global positioning system (GPS) receiver and Palm operating system based handheld computer for field reconnaissance, and a laptop computer with custom GIS software for data reduction. A portable printer can be added to the system if hardcopy maps are desired. After the reconnaissance data is collected, the conduit on the laptop computer uploads the data onto the laptop computer from the PDA, digital camera and GPS receiver. Once the data is on the laptop, the customized GIS application links the digital photos and the waypoints from the GPS to the damage data from the PDA. Within hours of acquiring the information, detailed maps of the reconnaissance area can be produced by utilizing query and visualization routines within the GIS application. The uploading and data reduction can be performed each night after reconnaissance activities have ceased, which can assist the teams in planning reconnaissance activities for the following day. Consequently, earthquake damage can be documented rapidly using more sophisticated techniques than with traditional methods. |
