My pick of the new programs
As always, this section has to be preceded by a disclaimer. The programs listed below are ones that caught my eye as being useful/interesting/different from the many submissions I receive. I have not tried any of these programs, and I am not making a recommendation. It is up to you to make your own choice. Some of these may not be "New" programs, but their entry in GGSD is new. That said, here is my pick. All the programs run under Windows.
GEOTECHNICAL PROGRAMS
Bearing capacity - Foundation pad analysis
A virtually free shareware Excel worksheet for designing shallow pad foundations for lighting tower bases, sign-bases etc. It can handle inclined loads, and determines bearing capacity of the base, sliding and overturning stability. It provides a graph of pad length to meet a range of allowable bearing pressures. There is an option to use a central driven pile to provide extra sliding and overturning capacity.
Drainage - Soakaway Design
For designing soakaways to BRE 365 guidelines.
Dynamics (soil-structure interaction) - SASSI2000
This is one of the new generation of programs that runs in your web browser, over the internet. It is a collection of programs for the analysis of dynamic soil-structure interaction problems in 2D or 3D. The flexible volume and subtraction methods of analysis are used; formulated in the frequency domain using the complex response method and the finite element technique.
Insitu testing - GGU-PLOAD
This program is used for the analysis and presentation of plate loading tests carried out in accordance with DIN 18134.
Instrumentation - DamSmart
A geotechnical instrumentation database that can be user configured for practically any type of instrument. Instrument readings can be imported from various data loggers or manually entered. The data readings are manipulated by user defined equations, and the data scanned for allowable ranges and thresholds. Output is as customised reports or plots.
Laboratory testing (soil) - GGU-GSD
The program produces grain size distribution curves from the raw laboratory test data for tests carried out according to DIN 18123. It also uses various empirical relationships to derive other material properties from the grading analysis such as filter criteria, permeability, frost resistance and angle of friction.
Numerical analysis (rock) - RocSupport
A tool for assisting with the design of tunnel support systems for circular excavations in weak rock. Given the excavation radius, in-situ stress conditions, rock parameters and support parameters, the program can perform either a deterministic or probabilistic analysis to find the corresponding factor of safety or probability of failure, and to assess the deformations. Rock bolt, steel set and shotcrete support can be modelled.
Retaining wall design - SPOOKS
A retaining wall design program from the Danish Geotechnical Institute. It can analyse anchored walls, staggered walls, soldier piles, diaphragm walls and secant pile walls using Brinch Hansen's theory or the Free Earth Support principle. It can handle multi-level bracing, sloping surfaces, additional pressure diagrams and partial surcharge loads. All external loads and ground properties may have partial safety factors applied.
Settlement analysis - FSConsol
A one dimensional consolidation program based on the Finite Strain Consolidation Theory that describes consolidation problems which involve large strains and non-linear soil properties. It can model a variety of consolidation problems ranging from a step loaded laboratory consolidation test, to a mine tailings pond with varying filling rates, changing pond areas and changing soil properties. In addition to settlement, it tracks the density, void ratio, excess pore pressure, and dissipation profiles with time.
Slope stability (soil) - Slide
RocScience are continuing to re-write their well established DOS programs for the Windows environment. The latest to receive the treatment is Slide, a 2-D slope stability analysis program that combines a CAD based graphical interface with a range of modelling and data interpretation options. It calculates safety factors for circular and non-circular slope failures by the methods of Bishop, Janbu, Spencer, Corp Engineers, Lowe & Karafiath, and GLE. Ground anchors with variable bonded length; geotextile reinforcement and soil nails can be modelled.
GEOENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS
Contaminant modelling - SEVIEW
This is a graphical pre- and post-processor for the well known SESOIL and AT123D models for integrated contaminant transport and fate modelling. It also links the SESOIL vadose zone model to the AT123D and BIOSCREEN groundwater models.
Groundwater modelling - GGU-MULTIWELL
A program for designing excavation dewatering installations. The excavation may be any shape, and with or without open water or a peripheral wall. The program has optimisation routines for well number, well radius and well depth.
GENERAL PROGRAMS
Data input - Profiler
A shareware program for manually extracting co-ordinates from a bitmap image of a geotechnical cross section and outputting the soil layer geometry as a Slope/W file to facilitate slope stability analysis.
Educational - Practical Geostatistics
A CD-ROM version of the book by Isobel Clark and William V Harper. It provides all the background statistical material needed for an understanding of geostatistical estimation and contains data sets, worked examples and exercises at the end of each chapter and answers in the back. A demo version of the EcoSSe geostatistical program is included so that the data sets can be analysed.
Geographical information systems - GeoLink
A GIS aimed at the hydrogeological and environmental monitoring market. Its capabilities allow the user to create and manage cartographic databases; maintain standard plan sets; build arbitrary plans using various projections; work with geographical and metric object co-ordinates; edit map legends; exchange geographic and attributive data with other GIS in different formats such as MOSS, MIF/MID or DXF/DBF.
Geophysics (surface) - DepthCon2000
A program that converts seismic profiles to true depth. The user draws a geological interpretation on the profile as a colour-filled polygon overlay, assigns interval velocities to each colour, and the program marries this model pixel-by-pixel with the time seismic, to present the data with depth.
Plotting and statistics - Analyse-it
An Excel add-in that provides statistical capabilities such as 14 parametric and 17 non-parametric procedures for calculating descriptives, correlation, regression and comparing means.
