My pick of the new programs
As always, this section has to be preceded by a disclaimer. The programs listed below are ones that caught my eye as being useful/interesting/different from the many submissions I receive. I have not tried any of these programs, and I am not making a recommendation. It is up to you to make your own choice. Some of these may not be "New" programs, but their entry in GGSD is new. That said, here is my pick. All the programs run under Windows, or on a PDA, or are accessed over the internet via a normal web browser.

GEOTECHNICAL PROGRAMS
Bearing capacity * Beam on elastic foundation
A free bearing capacity program for analysing a beam on an elastic (Winkler) foundation in accordance with EC2.
Dynamics (behaviour and earthquake) * CLiq
CLiq analyses liquefaction potential from CPT data using the NCEER method and addresses issues such as cyclic softening in clay-like soils and thin layer or layer transition zone detection. It provides results and plots for each calculation step, starting with the basic CPT data interpretation through to final plots of factor of safety, liquefaction potential index and post-earthquake displacements.
Dynamics (soil-structure interaction) * Win-SSI
Win-SSI uses the CLASSI methodology for dynamic soil-structure interaction analysis. The structure is represented using finite elements (this can be imported from most major FEA packages), and the soil is represented by Green's functions as an infinite media. The solution is in the time domain to produce a linear solution which works efficiently on a PC. Restrictions are that the foundations must be surface mounted and rigid which suits typical heavy nuclear structures.
Geothermal * TOUGH2-MP
TOUGH2-MP is the first parallel processing program to be listed in the GGSD and is a parallel version of the TOUGH2 code, which is a general-purpose numerical simulation program for multi-phase fluid and heat flow in porous and fractured media. It is intended for large-scale and high performance simulations running on distributed-memory or shared-memory parallel computers.
Insitu testing * RAPID CPT
RAPID CPT is a gINT add-in that imports raw data from many CPT cone manufacturers and in AGS Format. It performs most typical CPT evaluations including normalised and non-normalised soil behaviour type based on friction ratio or pore pressure, density, relative density, void ratio, effective friction angle, constrained modulus, coefficient of lateral earth pressure, undrained shear strength, over consolidation ratio, sensitivity, fines content and equivalent N(1)60.
Instrumentation * Geotech Monitory System
The Geotech Monitory System is a web based application that provides real time monitoring and multiple analysis tools for various kinds of geotechnical sensors such as electrolevels, loadcells and vibrating wire strain gauges. It can send alarm messages by SMS and email in response to exceeded predefined trigger levels.
Laboratory testing (rock) * ElmTree System
The ElmTree System is a laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for engineering laboratories that test construction materials. Its covers staff organisation, dispatching and sample tracking, client information and data input, as well as technical reporting, quality checks and invoicing. It includes some standard forms for aggregate and geotechnical field and laboratory test reporting.
Laboratory testing (soil) * One Point
One Point is a low cost Excel spreadsheet to calculate a field one point density result using the maximum wet density / speedy moisture method, a standard proctor using the ASTM D698-91 or AASHTO T99 methods, or a modified proctor using the ASTM D1557-91 or AASHTO T180 methods.
Numerical analysis (soil) * LimitState:GEO
LimitState:GEO is a geotechnical stability analysis program which directly identifies the critical layout of discontinuities in a soil mass at failure. It can analyse slopes, foundations or retaining walls, individually or in combination using Eurocode 7 partial factors and can handle multiple design cases.
Piles (lateral loading and groups) * Pile Group Design
Pile Group Design is a low cost spreadsheet that calculates pile forces for regular and irregular pile groups for multiple load combinations.
Piles (single) * AxPile
AxPile calculates the load carrying capacity of bored piles based on three different approaches and the anticipated settlement based on four different methods. It calculates ultimate and allowable pile capacity and provides an estimate of the modulus of subgrade reaction.
Retaining wall design * RetainWall
RetainWall is software for the design of concrete or masonry retaining walls. It analyses the stability of the wall considering base pressure, sliding and eccentricities. If the wall is a reinforced concrete structure, the software also supports the reinforcement design.
Settlement analysis * Settle3D
Settle3D is a program for the 3D analysis of vertical consolidation and settlement under foundations, embankments and surface excavations. Complex soil profiles and loading conditions can be created and the results viewed in 3-dimensions. Modelling can be staged, and time-dependent consolidation analysis can be performed including primary and secondary consolidation (creep) at user defined time intervals.
Slope stability (soil) * STABL WV 2007
STABL WV 2007 is yet another slope stability program using the Bishop, Janbu or Spencer methods.
GEOENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS
Contaminant modelling * VisualRflow
VisualRflow is a free program that simulates flow, transport and degradation of BTEX and chlorinated solvents in 2D using Modflow 2000.
Contaminant transport (1D) * UnSat Suite Plus
UnSat Suite Plus integrates multiple one-dimensional unsaturated zone flow and solute transport models into a single working environment. Models include SESOIL, VS2DT, VLEACH, PESTAN, Visual HELP and the International Weather Generator.
Contaminant transport (3D) * Visual MODFLOW Premium
Visual MODFLOW Premium is a three-dimensional groundwater flow and contaminant transport modelling application that integrates MODFLOW-2000, SEAWAT-2000, MODPATH, MT3DMS, MT3D99, RT3D, VMOD 3D-Explorer, WinPEST, Stream Routing Package, Zone Budget, MGO, SAMG and Win 32 MODFLOW.
Geoenvironmental database systems * ESDAT
ESDAT is a database system for hydrogeologists and contaminated site or landfill investigators who need to receive, store, analyse and report geo-environmental data. It includes an open database structure, customisable outputs, and links to ArcGIS, MapInfo, Surfer, gINT, WinLog and others.
GENERAL PROGRAMS
Borehole log production * Logman 8.0
Logman is a Vietnamese program to produce borehole logs and fence diagrams in AutoCAD versions 2000 to 2007.
Database systems (general) * Hydro GeoBase
Hydro GeoBase is an information management system for groundwater and environmental data that interfaces with borehole log preparation, geochemical and aquifer test analysis programs.
Field data collection * DrillMate
DrillMate is a PDA field data capture application for borehole investigations with an associated desktop reporting application. It provides a paperless system for the production of drilling records.
Geophysics (borehole) * DLIS Browser
DLIS Browser is a program for viewing geophysical log data files in LIS and DLIS formats.
Geophysics (surface) * GPRSim.net
GPRSim.net is a ground penetrating radar time domain simulation tool suitable for teaching basic concepts of electromagnetic wave propagation in different medias.
Plotting (2.5D & contouring) * Altipoint
Altipoint is a web service for creating digital terrain models. Point data sets can be uploaded and the system generates 3D contour models in DXF (Autocad), shapefile (ESRI), PostScript, TIFF, PNG or JPEG formats.
