My pick of the new programs
As always, this section has to be preceded by a disclaimer. The programs listed below are ones that caught my eye as being useful/interesting/different from the many submissions I receive. I have not tried any of these programs, and I am not making a recommendation. It is up to you to make your own choice. Some of these may not be "New" programs, but their entry in GGSD is new. That said, here is my pick. All the programs run under Windows or are accessed over the internet via a normal web browser.

GEOTECHNICAL PROGRAMS
Bearing capacity * GEOFOND
GEOFOND carries out bearing capacity and settlement analyses of shallow and deep foundations based on SPT, CPT, pressuremeter and dynamic penetrometer tests to French, English and North America standard methods, with both deterministic and probabilistic approaches.
Dynamics (behaviour and earthquake) * SPTLIQ
SPTLIQ analyzes liquefaction potential and earthquake-induced ground settlements using SPT data based on the simplified Seed-Idriss procedures.
Geotechnical software suites * Rapid Geotechnical Reporting
Rapid Geotechnical Reporting uses report templates to minimise the amount of time required to generate geotechnical engineering reports. The program collects answers to pre-designed questions and merges these into a Microsoft Word document. The program currently comes with templates for conventional shallow and deep foundations.
Insitu testing * OpenSounding
OpenSounding is an Open Source project that is developing a Java tool for presenting CPT data in SGF or CSV formats.
Laboratory testing (soil) * EarthFX Data Centre
EarthFX Data Centre is a web-based tool to manage the transfer of environmental chemistry results between laboratory and client, and to screen the incoming data against acceptance criteria.
Numerical analysis (soil) * Tunnel
Tunnel is an FEM program specifically for analysing tunnels, tunnel lining and support systems. It is an extension to the GEO5 FEM program.
Pavements * PCASE
PCASE is a suite of programs for rigid and flexible airfield and road pavement design by conventional and layered elastic methodologies.
Piles (lateral loading and groups) * PYGMY
PYGMY is a laterally loaded pile design program that uses FEM analysis of the pile bending and soil resistance represented by non-linear p-y springs. It outputs distributions of pile deflection, rotation, bending moment, shear force and spring force.
Piles (single) * OPILE
OPILE analyses single piles subjected to axial, lateral and torsional loads, displacements and rotations particularly suited to offshore engineering.
Reinforced slopes and walls * Macstars 2000
Macstars 2000 is free software used to check the stability of reinforced soil slopes built with Maccaferri products. It carries out both global and internal stability analyses.
Retaining wall design * Retaining Wall Software
Retaining Wall Software analyses gravity, semi-gravity and cantilever retaining walls. Output includes dimensioned AutoCAD drawings of the retaining wall, steel bar, steel bar table and material quantity tables.
Settlement analysis * SettlementAnalysis
SettlementAnalysis determines the settlement trough above a tunnel by automatic adjustment of Gauss and Yield-Density curves to fit observed settlement data.
Slope stability (rock) * AutoBlock
AutoBlock is a 3D CAD-based program for investigating rock slope and foundation stability problems. The input is a digital terrain model and measurements of rock discontinuity sets. The program locates critical areas by carrying out limit equilibrium analyses for all kinematically feasible unstable blocks.
GEOENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS
Geoenvironmental database systems * EarthFX Data Model
The EarthFX Data Model is a free Access 2000 database for storing groundwater environmental data.
Groundwater modelling * GW Contour
GW Contour is a data interpolation and contouring program that incorporates techniques for mapping velocity vectors and particle tracks that is used for analysing groundwater and contaminant data. It accepts ASCII, SHP, Excel, Access, Surfer and DXF input files, and outputs contours and flow diagrams.
GENERAL PROGRAMS
Field data collection * Sirovision
Sirovision provides visualisation of 3D laser scan point data clouds of rock faces and has tools to map rock jointing structure directly from the 3D images.
Geophysics (borehole) * BYLog
BYLog is an interactive well logging data viewer/editor that supports the LAS, LIS, DLIS file formats. It is available as an ActiveX component or web control for building into other applications.
Geophysics (surface) * EarthImager 1D
EarthImager 1D processes traditional vertical electrical sounding data collected with Schlumberger or Wenner arrays and reconstructs a 1D layered resistivity model incorporating surface topography.
Plotting (3D visualisation) * GeoVision
GeoVision is a 2D and 3D geological and geophysical visualisation program that handles GIS data, geological data, seismic 2D or 3D data, well tracks, well logs and engineering data. It has built-in functions to project volumetric data onto surfaces, and to project volume and surface data along well paths to integrate 2D and 3D survey data.
