My pick of the new programs
As always, this section has to be preceded by a disclaimer. The programs listed below are ones that caught my eye as being useful/interesting/different from the many submissions I receive. I have not tried any of these programs, and I am not making a recommendation. It is up to you to make your own choice. Some of these may not be "New" programs, but their entry in GGSD is new. That said, here is my pick. All the programs run under Windows or on a PDA.

GEOTECHNICAL PROGRAMS
Bearing capacity * ABC
ABC is free software that uses the method of stress characteristics (also known as the slip-line method) to solve the classic geotechnical bearing capacity problem of a rigid foundation, resting on a cohesive-frictional soil mass, loaded to failure by a central vertical force.
Dynamics (behaviour and earthquake) * Liq
Liq is a free program that carries out the evaluation of liquefaction potential according to Eurocode 8 or American standards, from SPT or CPT data. It uses a range of deterministic and probabilistic methods, and also calculates expected settlements.
Ground improvement * StoneC
StoneC is another free program from the same author as Liq that carries out the design of vibro-replacement stone columns according to the method of Priebe. It also performs bearing capacity calculations according to DIN 4017.
Insitu testing * WINSITU
WINSITU is a program for analysing insitu pressuremeter tests. It contains routines for implementing a number of standard and not so common analyses for assessing strength and stiffness of soils and rocks.
Numerical analysis (soil) * TUNREN
TUNREN is a tunnel design tool that assesses face stability, with or without reinforcement, and lateral support requirements using concrete, arches or bolts. The program is available in both English and French.
Pavements * ALIZE-LCPC
ALIZE-LCPC calculates road pavement designs by the French LCPC/SETRA method. It determines an acceptable design for a given set of traffic loadings and prescribed risks using a library of standard materials.
Piles (lateral loading and groups) * WinNFAD
WinNFAD is used to design a retrofitted foundation with a combination of existing piles, retrofit piles and tie-downs. For a given foundation rotation, a neutral axis is assumed and pile deflections are calculated and used to determine pile reactions from nonlinear force-deflection curves, and hence pile moments.
Piles (single) * PDPWAVE
PDPWAVE is a pile drive-ability prediction program for impact hammers using a one dimensional wave equation. It contains a library of hammer and pile types.
Reinforced slopes and walls * Keywall
Keywall is a free program for the design of mechanically stabilised earth walls using geogrids and Keystone retaining wall products.
Retaining wall design * DC-Cantilever
DC-Cantilever carries out the analysis of cantilever walls, including the assessment of overall stability and automatic optimisation of the foundation width. Analysis can use partial safety factors according to German DIN or Swiss SIA codes, with reinforced concrete design to British Standards, German DIN, Swiss SIA and Austrian OENORM. It is available in English and German.
Settlement analysis * Wickdrain
Wickdrain is a program for estimating wick drain assisted consolidation times and settlements of surcharged compressible soils according to the method of Hansbo.
Slope stability (soil) * SVDynamic
SVDynamic carries out slope stability analyses using the dynamic programming method to determine the location of the slip surface and factor of safety based on a finite element analysis.
GEOENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS
Contaminant transport (3D) * Pore-Cor Research Suite
Pore-Cor is a specialist software package for the study of pore level properties of any porous medium. From experimental laboratory data it generates a 3D model of the pores and their interconnections. The model can then be used to investigate permeability, diffusion, pore plugging, directional anisotropy, water retention and other such properties.
Geoenvironmental database systems * LA Contaminated Land Tool
LA Contaminated Land Tool is an add-on to the gINT Professional geotechnical database program that imports soil and groundwater contaminant data from AGS, Excel, Access, and Text format files. It carries out statistical analysis of the data as defined in UKEA CLR7 based on a user defined 3D zonation of the site, confidence limits and exclusion of outliers.
Groundwater flow (2D) * SEEPCALC
SEEPCALC is free to students and academics. It computes the volume of flow for a specified width of embankment, the exit gradients, Lane's creep ratio and compares these computed values to published criteria.
GENERAL PROGRAMS
Contract Planning and Management * Client Manager
Client Manager is a low cost database to manage contacts, projects, time, tasks, and correspondence, specifically for engineering and consulting organisations.
Field data collection * Pocket Dynamic
Pocket Dynamic is one program in a low cost set of tools that run on a PocketPC PDA. It is used to record and process dynamic probing test results on site.
Geological modelling * 2doc
2doc is software for documenting the ground conditions during tunnel construction. It is available in German and English.
Geophysics (surface) * MUSA
MUSA is a multi screen reporting and analysis tool for underground service detection using GPR, acoustic and electromagnetic sensors.
Geostatistics * AuRA Toolkit
AuRA Toolkit is used for the geostatistical analysis of 2D geotechnical, environmental or mining data.
Image analysis * WipJoint
WipJoint claims to assess rock joint characteristics and block size by automated analysis of a photographic image of a rock face.
Plotting (2.5D & contouring) * Surfit
Surfit is a free gridding and contouring program that implements the CMOFS method. The surface can be defined by x,y,z points or trend surfaces and can include fault lines.
Plotting (3D visualisation) * Environmental Insite
Environmental Insite is a program for visualisation spatial and temporal trends in multi-analyte groundwater data. It produces mapping, profiles, 3d visualisations, spatially distributed time history charts, pie charts, radial diagrams and data tables.
Site procedures * VSP
VSP provides statistical based answers to the questions; how many samples are needed, and where should the samples be taken ? The method provides random or gridded sampling locations overlaid on a user-input site map.
