Earlier this year I completed the most extensive update of the GGSD since it was first published in 1996. All suppliers listed now have either an e-mail or web site address, and most have both. Any supplier that is not on the internet has been deleted, together with their programs. This has removed a large number of obsolete entries from the Directory.

If you notice any listings that are out of date, or know of any programs that are missing from the GGSD, please let me know using the Contact form at http://www.ggsd.com/. I rely on your help to keep the Directory up to date.

My pick of the new programs

As always, this section has to be preceded by a disclaimer. The programs listed below are ones that caught my eye as being useful/interesting/different from the many submissions I receive. I have not tried any of these programs, and I am not making a recommendation. It is up to you to make your own choice. Some of these may not be "New" programs, but their entry in GGSD is new. That said, here is my pick. All the programs run under Windows, or on a PDA, or are accessed over the internet via a normal web browser.

GEOTECHNICAL PROGRAMS

Dynamics (behaviour and earthquake) * SHAKE2000

SHAKE2000 provides a graphical interface to the well established earthquake analysis program SHAKE. It provides numerous attenuation relationships for estimating peak horizontal acceleration and velocity with distance. There is calculation of permanent slope displacements due to earthquake shaking using the Newmark Method and a postprocessor for SEISRISK III, a computer program for seismic hazard estimation. Assessment of liquefaction potential can be carried out using SPT or CPT test data.

Insitu testing * Static Probing

Static Probing records, presents and analyses CPT test data and produces plots of many derived soil parameters such as angle of friction, relative density, total overburden stress, equivalent SPT N value, shear modulus, undrained cohesion, permeability, over-consolidation ratio, consolidation coefficient, consolidation modulus and Young's modulus.

Instrumentation * Inclinalysis

Inclinalysis processes and presents borehole inclinometer readings, and provides various plots for viewing the data.

Numerical analysis (rock) * ELFEN

ELFEN is a combined finite element and discrete element program for the 2D and 3D modelling of jointed rock subjected to quasi-static or dynamic loading conditions. It simulates fracture propagation and models both rigid and deformable blocks.

Piles (lateral loading and groups) * FB-Pier

FB-Pier is a non-linear finite element analysis program that computes the distribution of loads for pier structures and their foundations. Piles and pile groups can be vertical or battered, and connected to a rigid pile cap. Soil-structure interaction is modelled with p-y and t-z curves. AASHTO LRFD and LFD load combinations can be applied.

Reinforced slopes and walls * Forslope

Forslope is a free program for the analysis of reinforced slopes to BS8006 and other codes. It includes automated tools for optimising the reinforcing design.

Rock mechanics * Unwedge 3.0

Unwedge 3.0 is the first Windows version of the well known program from Rocscience for 3D rock wedge stability analysis in underground excavations. Safety factors are calculated for potentially unstable wedges and support requirements can be modelled using pattern and spot bolting and shotcrete. It uses a new analysis engine based on Goodman and Shi's block theory, which includes the ability to incorporate induced stress around the excavation and the effect on stability, and new strength models such as Barton-Bandis and Power Curve.

Slope stability (rock) * GeoRock (GeoStru)

GeoRock (GeoStru) carries out a statistical simulation of rock falls using the Lumped Mass or CRSP (Colorado Rockfall Simulation Program) models. The CRSP model considers combinations of movement in free fall, bounce, roll and slide that can vary in relation to the size of the blocks and the roughness of the slope. Energy, velocity, bounce and rock end points are reported and graphed to assist in the design of catch fences and ditches.

Slope stability (soil) * SLOPE/W Basic Edition

SLOPE/W is probably the most widely used commercial slope stability software in the world. Geo-Slope have now introduced a Basic Edition that has the essential features for solving slope stability problems including; circular, composite and fully specified failure surfaces, pore-water pressure conditions specified using a piezometric line, up to ten soil layers, undrained or cohesive and frictional soil strengths, surface surcharges or line loads, tension cracks and seismic coefficients.

GEOENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS

Contaminant transport (2D analytical) * HSSM-WIN

HSSM-WIN provides a Windows interface to the established HSSM program that models the flow and transport of the LNAPL phase from the surface, through the vadose zone to the water table.

Groundwater flow (2D) * PlaxFlow

PlaxFlow is a finite element package for the 2D analysis of groundwater flow problems. It can model precipitation, wells, drains, circular and non-circular tunnels, steady-state and transient flow, saturated and unsaturated conditions.

Groundwater flow (MODFLOW) * MODFLOW-SURFACT

MODFLOW-SURFACT is a 3D finite difference flow and contaminant transport model based on the USGS MODFLOW program. It extends the physical modelling capabilities of MODFLOW for subsurface flow calculations by adding mass conservative, multi-component contaminant transport capabilities.

GENERAL PROGRAMS

Borehole log production * Strater

Strater is a well log and borehole plotting program that allows logs to be customised with various types of graphic parameters plots. It has extensive facilities for data import and export, but unfortunately lacks capabilities to handle the most widely used geotechnical data transfer format in the world (the AGS Data Format). Hopefully, Golden Software will remedy this oversight in a future version.

Data validation * gINT AGS Checker

gINT AGS Checker is a utility to check the integrity of AGS Data Format files. The program is included within gINT version 6 but is also available for free download from the gINT website.

Field data collection * PQuake

PQuake is a very specialist program. If you are involved in assessing earthquake damage this program will allow you to collect field data using a GPS enabled PDA, and to process the data to produce detailed damage assessment maps in a GIS.

Image analysis * ORION

Orion uses satellite images or aerial photographs together with gridded topographic data to compute the structural orientation of geological strata or other planar structures.

Plotting (2.5D & contouring) * SurGe

SurGe uses a novel mathematical approximation method to produce contours of a 3D surface through a set of irregularly spaced XYZ coordinated points or 3D polylines. Faulted discontinuities can be defined, areas can be blanked out and cross-sections can be defined through several stacked surfaces.

Risk analysis * RAM

RAM (Risk Assessment Model) is a customisable quantitative decision tool for risk-based groundwater assessment in brown field redevelopment and environmental protection using the UK Environment Agency tiered methodologies. Prediction of contaminant transport and fate is based on the source-pathway-receptor approach. The software is also consistent with the principles of the ASTM RBCA.
