Description iVec is a module of the PTWorkshop package, but is also available separately. It carries out vector analysis of geotechnical, geomechanics and engineering design problems and utilizes stereographic projection for the display of vectors, planes and cones of friction. Statistical analysis for orientation clustering can be performed on sets of vectors or poles. Best-fit planes can also be determined from trace-map measurements. This is particularly useful to determine joint sets required for performing limit equilibrium analysis on wedges and blocks. Many basic vector operations based on dot products and cross products are also provided including: Angle between two planes; Plane orthogonal to two planes; Line of intersection of two planes; Plane containing three vectors; Rotation of vectors. Contour levels can be specified, or automatically determined using the minimum and maximum values, or an equalized histogram distribution. Vectors, planes, cones and scalars can be interactively created and cloned. Vectors can be entered by bearing and plunge or x,y,z. Planes can be input using dip and dip-direction, or x,y,z values of plane normals. Known points on planes can also be entered. Cones are entered as vectors, with a given angle for the cone. The operations wizard provides the following functions: Computes the plane containing two vectors; Computes the plane containing three points; Computes the plane orthogonal to two planes; Computes the intersection of two planes; Computes the intersection of two vectors; Computes the angle between two planes; Computes the angle between a plane and vector; Fits a plane to a set of points (vectors); Computes the angle between two vectors; Computes the cone between two vectors; Scales a vector by a scalar value; Adds two vectors; Translates a vector by another vector; Computes the orthographic projection of a vector onto a plane; Computes a vector at a given angle from one vector to another; Rotates a vector by an angle about an axis. A demonstration version is available on the www.
