Description VADOSE/W is a software program that links the environment, the ground surface, the vadose zone and the local groundwater regime. To compute accurate flux boundaries in the vadose zone it accounts for precipitation, evaporation, snow accumulation, snow melt, surface water runoff, ponding, groundwater seepage, ground freezing and thawing, and actual plant transpiration. Climate parameters can be user-specified or imported from the 41 site global climate database included. All climate data can be custom scaled to the specific geographic location. The program extends the concepts found in the SoilCover program into two dimensions. Critical to the formulation is its ability to predict actual evaporation as a function of the soil water stress state. It is not enough to base the evaporation calculation on soil water content, drying time, or empirical user-defined relationships. Instead, it uses the rigorous Penman-Wilson method to compute actual evaporation as a function of soil water pressure, a stress state variable. New features in 2007 version: Multiple analyses of similar or different types can be done in a single project file. Different solutions can be compared in the same file. Staged analyses can be done for construction sequencing with moving boundary conditions. Define boundary conditions and material properties by geometry region, rather than on the finite element mesh. Unstructured quadrilateral mesh with fine-tuning options. Interface elements can be added on lines to model soil-structure interactions, liners and geo-fabrics, cutoff walls and wick drains. Define a results graph on a geometry object (line, point, or region) or on a cut line or plane. Plot multiple results graphs together to compare data. Make a movie of analysis results to show how results change over time. Custom user add-in functions to define material property or boundary condition functions using internal solver data or external data held in Excel or any other .NET program. Examples with a detailed discussion on how to use and apply the relevant features and how to interpret the results. Fault-tolerant licensing on a wide area network. Solver option to use the faster PARDISO system. The finite element equations are optimized for multi-processor computers. Solve coupled, uncoupled or isothermal models and choose the level of coupling. A Basic 1D version is available. 1D analyses can be done in the free Student Edition.
